Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav on Monday filed his nomination papers for re-election as the party’s national president, eyeing his 13th consecutive term at the helm of the party he founded in 1997.
The nomination was formally submitted at the RJD’s state headquarters in Patna to election officer Ram Chandra Purbey. Lalu Prasad was accompanied by his son and Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav.
Celebrating the occasion, Tejashwi described his father as the “Messiah of the poor,” and expressed confidence in his continued leadership. “Lalu ji’s nomination has brought immense happiness to the RJD family. From workers to senior leaders, everyone is excited. Under his guidance, we are hopeful of achieving significant success in the upcoming elections,” he said.
RJD Rajya Sabha MP and Lalu’s daughter Misa Bharti confirmed the nomination and said that the election process is being conducted as per the Election Commission’s guidelines.
The nomination filing aligns with the party’s ongoing internal polls for the national council and state executive. As per the schedule, the nomination window closed on June 20, scrutiny was done on June 21, and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is June 23. Voting, if necessary, is slated for July 5.
However, with no other candidate in the fray, Lalu Prasad is widely expected to be re-elected unopposed.
In a significant move during the RJD national executive meeting held last week, a resolution was passed authorising Lalu Prasad to take key organisational decisions, including finalising candidates for internal posts.
Party insiders say that more than 1.5 crore primary members across Bihar and other states are participating in the organisational elections this year.
Lalu Prasad’s re-election comes at a crucial time as Bihar prepares for assembly elections later this year. The RJD aims to consolidate its voter base and strengthen its organisational network under his continued leadership.
