Hours after the United States launched coordinated airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, expressing “deep concern” over the rising tensions in the region. He urged for “immediate de-escalation” through diplomatic dialogue.

In a post shared on X, PM Modi said the two leaders held an in-depth discussion on the unfolding situation and emphasized India’s consistent stance in favor of regional peace and stability. “Reiterated India’s support for diplomacy and dialogue. Stressed the need for early restoration of peace, security and stability in the region,” the Prime Minister posted.

This marked India’s first official reaction since US President Donald Trump confirmed American bombers had struck Iran’s key nuclear enrichment sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. Reports suggest bunker buster bombs and cruise missiles were used in the operation, dramatically escalating the ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

While PM Modi’s statement refrained from directly mentioning the US strikes or assigning blame, it signaled India’s concern over the growing volatility. The Indian position remained neutral, avoiding explicit condemnation of any party and focusing instead on broader appeals for peace and restraint.

The situation continues to evolve rapidly. Iran, which claims it was engaged in nuclear negotiations with European nations prior to the strikes, has accused Israel of provoking the current escalation. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, addressing a press conference in Tehran, said Iran “reserves all options” in response to the attacks. While calling for the door to dialogue to remain open, he stressed that the current state of affairs was “not normal,” and that Iran retains its “legitimate right of self-defence.”

India’s call for restraint and dialogue underscores its diplomatic balancing act as it navigates deepening fault lines in the region, while preserving strategic relationships with both the US and Iran.
