The world comes together today to mark the 11th International Day of Yoga, celebrating an ancient Indian discipline that promotes harmony between the mind, body, and nature. Observed annually on June 21, the day highlights the far-reaching physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of yoga.
History and Origin
The concept of International Yoga Day was first proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address at the 69th United Nations General Assembly on September 27, 2014. In his speech, PM Modi described yoga as “an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition” that embodies the unity of mind and body.
His call found overwhelming support, and on December 11, 2014, the United Nations officially adopted the resolution to observe June 21 as International Yoga Day, with a record 175 member states endorsing the proposal.
Why June 21?
June 21 is the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. This date holds spiritual and symbolic importance across cultures and aligns perfectly with yoga’s aim of creating balance between nature and human well-being.
Theme for 2025: “Yoga for One Earth, One Health”
This year’s theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” underscores the interconnectedness of personal wellness and planetary health. The message reflects the ancient Indian philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” the belief that the whole world is one family.
According to the United Nations, “In caring for ourselves, we begin to care for the Earth,” reinforcing that sustainable living begins with self-awareness and mindful practices like yoga.
Major Celebrations in 2025
At the United Nations, New YorkA grand yoga session is being hosted at the UN Headquarters in New York, jointly organized by the Permanent Mission of India to the UN and the UN Secretariat. The event will be held from 5 PM to 6:30 PM (EDT) on the North Lawn of the UN building.
