Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday disclosed that he had turned down an invitation from former US President Donald Trump to visit Washington, choosing instead to honor his scheduled visit to Odisha. Addressing a large public rally in Bhubaneswar, PM Modi said that his deep commitment to visiting the “land of Mahaprabhu” took precedence.“
Just two days ago, I was in Canada for the G7 Summit. During my visit, President Trump called me personally and said, ‘Since you are in Canada, why not stop by Washington for dinner and talks?’ He extended the invitation very warmly,” PM Modi told the crowd.“
I respectfully told him – Thank you for the invitation, but I must return to India. It is important for me to visit the land of Mahaprabhu. That’s why I came here, to be with all of you in Odisha,” he said, to loud applause.
The Prime Minister was in the state to mark the first anniversary of the BJP’s historic first government in Odisha. During the event, PM Modi launched 105 development projects worth over ₹18,600 crore. He also flagged off several new train services, including the inaugural passenger train to Boudh district.
Additionally, PM Modi unveiled the ‘Odisha Vision Document’, outlining the government’s roadmap for the state’s future development. He also felicitated several ‘Lakhpati Didis’ women entrepreneurs who have achieved financial independence through self-help initiatives.
The Prime Minister’s visit underlines the BJP’s commitment to Odisha’s growth and comes at a time when the party is seeking to further strengthen its base in the eastern state.
