A tragic landslide on the Kedarnath trek route in Uttarakhand claimed the lives of two pilgrims and left three others injured on Wednesday. The incident occurred around 11:20 am near the Jangalchatti ghat area when massive boulders, loosened by heavy rainfall, tumbled down a hillside and struck the trekking path.
According to police officials, five individuals were hit by the falling boulders, with some even plunging into a nearby ditch due to the impact. Rescue teams from the local police and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), stationed at the Jangalchatti outpost, rushed to the site and immediately began evacuation efforts.“
Three people were injured, including one woman with minor injuries. Two male victims have sustained serious injuries and have been referred to Gaurikund hospital for further treatment,” an official said.
The identities of the two deceased individuals are currently being verified.
This incident comes just two days after another fatal landslide on the same trek route, raising concerns over safety amid the ongoing monsoon season. Authorities have now intensified monitoring of the route and are advising pilgrims to proceed with caution.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall across several districts in Uttarakhand this week, warning of potential landslides and road blockages in vulnerable areas.
