A series of powerful explosions rocked eastern Tehran on Wednesday afternoon, marking the sixth day of the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel. Witnesses reported at least five columns of smoke rising in the eastern and southeastern parts of the Iranian capital, with blasts heard around 3:50 PM local time.
The Israeli military has claimed responsibility for the airstrikes. “The IAF is currently striking military targets belonging to the Iranian Regime in Tehran,” the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
The latest offensive came just hours after Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei delivered a televised speech, rejecting calls for surrender from the United States. It was his first public appearance since June 13.
In the recorded message, the 86-year-old cleric strongly criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s demand for Iran’s unconditional capitulation. “The Americans should know that any U.S. military intervention will undoubtedly be accompanied by irreparable damage,” he warned.
Khamenei emphasized that the Iranian people would never respond to threats or coercion. “Intelligent people who know Iran, the Iranian nation, and its history will never speak to this nation in threatening language because the Iranian nation will not surrender,” he said.
He also condemned Israel’s actions, declaring that the country had “made a huge mistake” by launching attacks on Iran and would be “punished” for its aggression. Khamenei further rejected the idea of any “imposed peace,” signaling his refusal to engage in ceasefire talks orchestrated by the U.S. or Israel.
The remarks and subsequent strikes mark a sharp escalation in the conflict, drawing international concern over the possibility of a broader regional war.
