The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) has issued a formal apology after sparking widespread outrage for sharing a map that inaccurately depicted Jammu and Kashmir as part of Pakistan. The incident triggered a flurry of criticism on social media, particularly from Indian users who flagged the error and demanded immediate correction.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the IDF acknowledged the mistake, stating that the map was not intended to reflect precise international boundaries but merely served as a regional illustration. “This post is an illustration of the region. This map fails to precisely depict borders. We apologize for any offence caused by this image,” the IDF said in its clarification.

The apology followed after numerous Indian users, including several tagging Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, raised concerns over the incorrect representation of India’s sovereign territory.

Congress Slams Modi Over Diplomatic Slip

Reacting sharply to the incident, the opposition Congress party took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, criticising the government’s handling of foreign relations. Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera mocked the situation on X, saying, “Another day, another feather in Vishwaguru’s cap. His ‘friend’ shows Jammu & Kashmir as a part of Pakistan.”

The remark alludes to the close ties between PM Modi and his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu. Since Modi’s landmark visit to Israel in 2017 the first-ever by an Indian Prime Minister the two nations have strengthened diplomatic, defence, and economic cooperation through multiple high-profile visits and public displays of camaraderie.

Israel-Iran Tensions Escalate

Meanwhile, tensions between Israel and Iran have reached new heights. After Israeli forces launched a series of overnight airstrikes targeting Iran’s military and nuclear infrastructure under ‘Operation Rising Lion’, Iran retaliated with a massive missile assault.

On Saturday morning, Iran fired a barrage of missiles targeting northern Israel. Air raid sirens blared across the region as civilians were urged to seek shelter. Earlier, Iran had also deployed over 100 drones toward Israel in retaliation for the Israeli strikes that reportedly killed several high-ranking Iranian military officials, including Revolutionary Guards chief Hossein Salami.

The escalating conflict threatens to further destabilize the already volatile Middle East, drawing global concern over the risk of a wider confrontation.
