Congress Slams PM Modi Over Trump’s Repeated Claims on India-Pakistan Ceasefire

The Congress party on Saturday sharpened its attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning his continued silence over former US President Donald Trump’s repeated assertions that he brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.

Marking Trump’s 79th birthday, Congress General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh pointed out that in the 34 days between May 10 and June 13, 2025, Trump publicly claimed on 13 separate occasions across three countries that he had successfully mediated to stop hostilities between India and Pakistan, using trade as leverage.“

@narendramodi when will you speak up?” Ramesh asked in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He also shared a list of Trump’s claims, along with quotes and media links, highlighting each instance where the former US President boasted about his alleged role.

Ramesh further posted a video clip where Trump reiterated his claim of having “stopped a war between India and Pakistan” through trade negotiations.

The Congress leader criticized Modi’s silence on the matter, even as India is mourning the victims of the recent Ahmedabad air tragedy. “While the country is engulfed in grief, President Trump continues to make these claims, and the Prime Minister remains silent,” Ramesh added.

The tensions between India and Pakistan escalated following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. In response, India conducted precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) on May 7. Pakistan retaliated with attempts to target Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10. Hostilities deescalated after both sides reached an understanding during a meeting between their respective Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) on May 10.

While Trump claims credit for de-escalating the conflict, the Indian government maintains that the ceasefire was the result of direct military-to-military dialogue between the two nations.

The Congress party has also accused the Modi government of suffering multiple diplomatic setbacks in its relations with the US. According to Ramesh, three recent developments reflect a failure in India’s foreign policy:

1. US Army General Michael Kurilla’s remark calling Pakistan a “phenomenal partner” in counterterrorism.

2. Pakistan’s Army Chief General Asim Munir’s reported visit to Washington for US Army Day celebrations.

3. Comments by a Trump administration spokesperson further linking India and Pakistan diplomatically.“

These are serious setbacks for India’s foreign policy. But instead of addressing these issues, the Prime Minister is busy with divisive domestic politics,” Ramesh said. He urged Modi to set aside political stubbornness and call an all-party meeting as well as a special Parliament session to discuss the matter.
