In a shocking act of violence that has rattled the residents of Bihar’s capital, a mother and her daughter were brutally gunned down inside their home near Arfabad Canal in the Alamganj area early Monday morning. The father, Dhananjay Prasad, sustained critical injuries and is currently undergoing treatment.
Gruesome Attack Leaves Two Dead, One Critical
The deceased have been identified as:
Mahalaxmi Devi – reportedly a nurse by profession
Santhali Kumari – her daughter
Dhananjay Prasad – Mahalaxmi’s husband, who survived but is critically injured
According to officials, the attack took place around dawn, when two assailants arrived on a motorcycle and stormed the residence. Without warning, they opened fire on the family members, showing no mercy even to Dhananjay, who was reportedly paralyzed and bedridden.
He was rushed to Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) for urgent care.
Crime Scene Yields Alarming Clues
Law enforcement officials, led by City SP Akhilesh Jha, reached the scene soon after the attack. The police have recovered several items from the crime scene that point to a premeditated assault:
A knife
A sickle (daranti)
Four live cartridges
This discovery indicates the attackers may have been prepared for a violent confrontation involving more than just firearms.
Neighbours Speak: Victims Lived Quietly, Kept to Themselves
Local residents described the family as reserved and low-profile. According to several neighbours, Mahalaxmi Devi and her daughter were rarely seen interacting with the community.“
The family didn’t socialize much,” said one neighbour, adding to speculation that personal enmity or a past feud might be at the heart of the attack.

Although the motive remains unconfirmed, authorities are actively exploring several possible leads:
Personal Enmity: Investigators are reviewing whether long-standing grudges or unresolved conflicts could be a factor.
