In a recent interview with AI researcher Lex Fridman, Google CEO Sundar Pichai addressed the evolving impact of artificial intelligence on programming, emphasizing that AI tools are not here to replace coders but to empower them.

Pichai highlighted the potential of AI platforms like Google’s own Gemini to reduce the more repetitive and time-consuming aspects of programming. “AI hopefully takes a lot of that away,” he said, “makes it even more fun to code, and frees up more time to create, problem-solve, and brainstorm with colleagues.”

Rather than eliminating jobs, AI is expanding what’s possible, Pichai explained. He painted an optimistic picture where AI opens up new opportunities, enabling people to focus on more meaningful and creative tasks.

In a significant reveal, Pichai noted that around 30% of the code written at Google today is AI-assisted. However, he stressed that the real value lies in the boost AI gives to the company’s “engineering velocity” the speed and efficiency with which developers can deliver updates, features, and improvements.“

We rigorously measure this,” Pichai said. “Our estimates are that engineering velocity has increased by about 10% thanks to AI.”

Importantly, Google isn’t slowing down on hiring developers. In fact, Pichai believes that AI will make programming more accessible and creative, leading to more innovation and more engineers entering the field.“

AI tools aren’t replacing developers,” he concluded. “They’re helping people become better programmers.”

With tech giants like Google leaning into AI-augmented development, the future looks more collaborative than competitive between humans and machines.
