A disturbing incident at a government hospital in Mhow, Indore district, has sparked public outrage and prompted an official investigation after a stray dog was seen carrying the mutilated body of a newborn near the hospital’s toilet area.
According to hospital officials, the incident occurred during the early hours of Saturday, between 1:30 am and 2:00 am. CCTV footage reportedly shows a 17-year-old girl entering the toilet around that time. The teenager had been admitted to the hospital on Friday night at 9:00 pm, complaining of abdominal pain.
Dr. H.R. Verma, in charge of Mhow Civil Hospital, stated that the girl is suspected to have delivered the baby in the hospital toilet. Soon after, she reportedly fled the facility with an unidentified man.
A security guard noticed a stray dog carrying what appeared to be a newborn and managed to retrieve the body. Sources confirm that the body had been partially eaten by the dog. Hospital authorities believe the infant was stillborn and the birth was premature.”
The post-mortem was conducted on Saturday morning, and we are awaiting the full report. Preliminary findings indicate a premature delivery,” said Dr. Verma. The body has since been kept in the hospital mortuary.
The hospital has three entry points, which remained open overnight. Officials noted that stray dogs frequently enter the premises through a gate near the storeroom. In response, Dr. Verma has issued immediate orders to close all gates at night and deploy additional security personnel to prevent such incidents in the future.
Mhow police have launched a formal investigation. Station in-charge Rahul Sharma confirmed they have received CCTV footage and details provided by the girl at the time of her admission.
This incident comes just days after a tragic case in Mandsaur district, where a four-year-old boy was fatally attacked by stray dogs, raising renewed concerns over stray animal management in public spaces across Madhya Pradesh.
