Union Home Minister Amit Shah, addressing a massive gathering of BJP cadres in Madurai on Sunday, issued a resounding call to action for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, asserting that the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)’s days are “numbered.” Shah declared that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the BJP and AIADMK, is poised to form the next government in the state.“
This very meeting marks the beginning of change the end of the DMK government,” Shah told the cheering crowd. “Madurai is a city that heralds transformation. No matter where I am, my ears are always tuned to the voice of Tamil Nadu.”
Drawing parallels with recent political developments across India, Shah said, “In 2024, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumed office for the third term, we also secured a decisive victory in Odisha. In 2025, AAP was ousted in Delhi, and BJP came to power. Similarly, Tamil Nadu will see a BJP-led government in 2026.”
Taking a pointed swipe at Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Shah said, “The CM claims that Amit Shah cannot defeat the DMK. But it’s not me it’s the people of Tamil Nadu who will ensure your defeat.”
Acknowledging his inability to address the audience in Tamil, Shah remarked, “I apologise to my Tamil Nadu BJP workers for not being able to speak in one of India’s most beautiful languages Tamil,” drawing a warm response from the audience.

National Security and Operation Sindoor
Shah also highlighted the government’s strong stance on national security, citing Operation Sindoor, the military action carried out in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. “We struck terrorists on their soil, 100 km inside Pakistan. Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, India has responded to terror with unmatched resolve,” he said, adding that the operation is “not over” and that further action will follow if provoked.
Corruption Allegations and Governance Critique
Turning his focus to state issues, Shah accused the DMK government of corruption, alleging a ₹35,000-crore scam in TASMAC (Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation). “Even the poor are falling victim to hooch tragedies, yet the government remains silent,” he claimed.
He also challenged the DMK’s development claims, saying, “Not even 10% of their manifesto promises have been fulfilled, yet they claim 90% completion. I dare them to prove it.”
Call for Tamil in Technical Education
Reiterating a long-standing demand, Shah urged the Tamil Nadu government to introduce Tamil in engineering education. “Why not allow students to learn engineering in Tamil? I’ve been raising this issue repeatedly,” he said.
Mobilisation for Lord Murugan Conference
The rally also served as a platform to mobilise support for the upcoming June 22 event in Madurai, led by Union Minister L Murugan. Shah urged all cadres and the public to participate enthusiastically in the conference for Lord Murugan.
State Leaders Back NDA’s Vision
BJP Tamil Nadu president Nainar Nagendran echoed Shah’s sentiments, criticising the DMK’s handling of law and order and referring to rising crimes in the western Kongu region. He described the party’s alliance with AIADMK as “suitable” and pledged to lead a strong contingent of MLAs into the next Assembly, comparing the mission to a political yatra.
BJP state chief K. Annamalai added that the party’s sole objective is to unseat the DMK and urged cadres to stay committed to this “sankalpa” (resolution).
Amit Shah’s visit, his second in two months, marks a strategic move to energise the party base and strengthen the NDA’s ground game in Tamil Nadu ahead of the crucial 2026 polls.
