The University Grants Commission (UGC) has revised its guidelines regarding dual degrees, bringing relief to students who have earned two degrees at the same time. In a significant update, the UGC has announced that degrees obtained simultaneously even before the 2022 notification will now be considered valid.
Background of the Change
Previously, the UGC’s dual degree guidelines issued on 13 April 2022 allowed students to pursue two full-time academic programs simultaneously, provided the class timings did not overlap. However, these benefits were applicable only to degrees pursued after the date of the notification. This meant that students who had completed dual degrees prior to April 2022 were excluded.

With the latest amendment, the UGC has removed this limitation, ensuring that degrees earned simultaneously before the 2022 guideline are also recognized. The decision safeguards the efforts of thousands of students who completed two academic programs together, often in different modes such as physical, online, or Open and Distance Learning (ODL).
What Has Changed
The earlier restriction on dual degrees earned before April 2022 has been lifted. Now, all students regardless of when they earned their simultaneous degrees will benefit from the updated rules.
Both degrees will be considered valid as long as the prescribed academic standards were followed.
This revision brings clarity and recognition to students who had pursued dual academic paths, ensuring their qualifications remain valuable in academic and professional spaces.
