India’s active Covid-19 cases have surged to 4,866, with 564 new infections reported in the past 24 hours, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday morning. The virus has claimed seven more lives during this period, including a five-month-old child.
Of the seven fatalities, three were reported from Maharashtra, while Delhi and Karnataka accounted for two deaths each. Health authorities noted that six of the deceased were elderly individuals with pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and pneumonia. The infant who died was reportedly suffering from respiratory complications.
The recent rise in cases is being linked to emerging variants, including LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and the newly detected NB.1.8.1 subvariant. Since May 22, the active caseload has jumped sharply from 257 to nearly 5,000.

Kerala continues to report the highest number of active cases, followed by Delhi, West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Karnataka.
Government & Health Advisory
In response to the rising numbers, the central government has issued fresh advisories to all states and union territories. Authorities have been urged to ensure the readiness of medical infrastructure, including the availability of oxygen and essential life-saving medications.
Health experts are urging citizens to remain vigilant, particularly vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with chronic illnesses. Experts also caution that Covid-19 symptoms can overlap with other seasonal viral infections, making accurate diagnosis crucial.
The Indian Medical Association has reiterated the importance of preventive measures, including mask usage, frequent handwashing, and avoiding crowded spaces, to mitigate the spread of the virus.
As the situation evolves, health authorities continue to monitor developments and assess the potential impact of new variants on public health.
