Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) faced intense criticism on Wednesday after posting a celebratory video just hours after a tragic stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium left 11 people dead and several others injured. The video, which showed the team’s bus being welcomed by cheering fans, was captioned, “This welcome is what pure love looks like.” It was swiftly deleted following widespread backlash online for its perceived insensitivity.

RCB Issues Statement of Grief

In response to the outrage and the tragic incident, RCB issued an official statement expressing sorrow and solidarity with the victims and their families.“

We are deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents that have come to light through media reports regarding public gatherings all over Bengaluru in anticipation of the team’s arrival this afternoon. The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us.

RCB mourns the tragic loss of lives and extends heartfelt condolences to the affected families. Immediately upon being made aware of the situation, we promptly amended our program and followed the guidance of the local administration. We urge all our supporters to please stay safe,” the statement read.

National Leaders Mourn Victims

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences via the PMO’s official X handle, calling the incident “absolutely heartrending.”

“The mishap in Bengaluru is absolutely heartrending. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that those who are injured have a speedy recovery,” he stated.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar also expressed his grief, posting:“

People who were supposed to witness RCB’s IPL victory celebrations. The tragedy and death have brought deep pain and shock. My condolences to the deceased and their families. Let there be pride, but not bigger than life. I appeal to everyone to please stay safe.”

Chaos Preceded the Stampede

The fatal incident occurred as thousands of RCB fans gathered outside the stadium to celebrate the franchise’s maiden IPL title win. The team had returned after defeating Punjab Kings in the final held in Ahmedabad. The felicitation event, however, quickly turned into chaos as the crowd overwhelmed security arrangements, leading to a stampede at multiple entry points.

Visuals shared earlier in the day showed frantic scenes of fans scaling fences and walls in a desperate attempt to gain access to the venue.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, and officials have urged the public to avoid large gatherings without prior coordination with local administration.
