A fresh political storm has erupted in Madhya Pradesh after Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda made a controversial remark claiming that “the entire country, including the army, bows at the feet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.” The statement, made during a Civil Defence programme in Jabalpur, has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties, who have accused the BJP leader of disrespecting the Indian Armed Forces.

Controversial Statement Amid Civil Defence Event

Deputy CM Devda was addressing Civil Defence volunteers during a training event in Jabalpur when he expressed outrage over the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, where tourists were reportedly targeted based on their religion. While condemning the attack and calling for the elimination of terrorism, Devda praised PM Modi’s leadership, stating, “the entire country, including the army and soldiers, bows at the feet of Prime Minister Modi.”

The remark quickly gained traction online and in political circles, triggering condemnation from opposition leaders and civil society groups.

Opposition Slams BJP Over Army Remarks

Reacting strongly, Leader of Opposition in Madhya Pradesh, Umang Singhar of the Congress party, called the remarks “absurd and insulting.” He accused the BJP leadership of repeatedly undermining the dignity of the armed forces and demanded accountability from the ruling party. Singhar also referenced an earlier controversy involving Madhya Pradesh Minister Vijay Shah, who faced backlash over alleged comments against decorated soldier Col. Sofiya Qureshi.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also condemned Devda’s statement, calling it “extremely shameful and unfortunate.” She said BJP leaders have developed a habit of insulting the military and questioned why no action has been taken against them. “The people of India are proud of the valour and sacrifice of our armed forces, yet BJP leaders continue to degrade them without consequence,” she stated.

Congress Demands Devda’s Removal

At a press conference in New Delhi, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate played a video of Devda’s speech and termed the comment “blasphemous and shameless.” She emphasized the military’s unmatched contribution to national security and cited historical examples of India’s victories in wars and counter-terror operations.“

Our soldiers have repeatedly defended the nation – from the heights of Siachen to the deserts of Rajasthan. They deserve honour, not political exploitation,” Shrinate said, demanding the immediate dismissal of Devda. “If Prime Minister Modi does not act, it will indicate that this statement had his endorsement,” she added.

Shrinate also revisited the Vijay Shah controversy, accusing the BJP of shielding leaders who make inflammatory remarks. She criticized the BJP for inaction until the judiciary intervened and accused both the central and state governments of being “mute spectators.”

BJP Defends Devda

Responding to the backlash, BJP’s state media in-charge Ashish Usha Agarwal defended Devda, stating that his comments were misinterpreted. “The Deputy CM meant that the entire nation holds the army in high regard and recognizes the leadership of Prime Minister Modi in strengthening national security. The Congress is twisting the statement for political gains,” he said.

Broader Political Context

The controversy comes at a time when political tensions are high in Madhya Pradesh, with multiple BJP ministers under scrutiny for their public statements. Congress has intensified its criticism, alleging that the ruling party is undermining national institutions for political mileage.

As the debate continues, all eyes are now on the BJP leadership and whether any action will be taken against the Deputy CM. The opposition, meanwhile, has vowed to keep up the pressure, calling for accountability and respect for the armed forces.
