U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday welcomed the ceasefire understanding between India and Pakistan, following days of escalating hostilities triggered by the Pahalgam terror attack. Trump praised the leadership of both nations and expressed readiness to facilitate a resolution to the long-standing Kashmir dispute.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump commended the decision to halt military operations, describing it as a “historic and heroic decision” that potentially saved millions of lives. He also announced plans to increase trade with both India and Pakistan and offered U.S. support in seeking a peaceful solution to the Kashmir conflict.“
I am very proud of the strong and unwaveringly powerful leadership of India and Pakistan for having the strength, wisdom, and fortitude to fully know and understand that it was time to stop the current aggression that could have led to the death and destruction of so many, and so much,” Trump wrote. “While not even discussed, I am going to increase trade substantially with both of these great Nations. Additionally, I will work with you both to see if, after a ‘thousand years,’ a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir.”

Ceasefire Understanding Reached, Then Violated
The ceasefire understanding was reportedly reached through a direct conversation between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMO) of India and Pakistan on Saturday afternoon. Both sides agreed to cease all hostilities across land, air, and sea from 5:00 PM IST.
However, within hours of the announcement, Pakistan breached the agreement by launching drone attacks on Indian cities. Indian forces responded with what officials described as “adequate and appropriate” countermeasures.
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri condemned the violations, urging Pakistan to act responsibly. “This is a breach of the understanding arrived at earlier today,” Misri said. “We call upon Pakistan to take appropriate steps to address these violations and uphold the ceasefire.”
Tensions Escalated After Pahalgam Attack
Hostilities between the two nations had intensified following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 people, mostly tourists. In response, India carried out targeted strikes on nine terrorist facilities in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Pakistan retaliated with cross-border shelling and drone strikes targeting both civilians and military assets.
The United States has emphasized its commitment to regional stability and signaled its willingness to support dialogue between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
