Hours after India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on all fronts, multiple explosions were reported in Srinagar on Saturday evening, sparking fear and confusion across the city. The sudden escalation prompted former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah to question the effectiveness of the truce.
Taking to social media platform X, Omar posted a 44-second video capturing the sounds of loud blasts amid darkness. “What the hell just happened to the ceasefire? Explosions heard across Srinagar!!!” he wrote. “This is no ceasefire. The air defence units in the middle of Srinagar just opened up,” he added in a follow-up post.

Residents across Srinagar were alarmed by the blasts, which also triggered air raid sirens throughout the city. Similar scenes of panic were reported from Baramulla in North Kashmir and Budgam in Central Kashmir.
The fresh tension comes despite a ceasefire agreement reached earlier in the day, following a phone call between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan. According to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, the two sides had agreed to cease all military operations land, sea, and air starting at 5:00 PM IST.“
Pakistan’s DGMO called the Indian DGMO at 15:35 hours today. It was agreed that all firing and military actions would stop from 1700 hours onwards,” Misri stated during a press briefing. He also confirmed that both sides had issued orders to implement the ceasefire and scheduled a follow-up DGMO-level meeting for May 12 at noon.
Meanwhile, in Punjab’s Firozpur district, local authorities reimposed a blackout as a precautionary measure. Residents were urged to turn off all lights and follow previously issued safety guidelines. “There is no need for panic,” the administration assured, while emphasizing the importance of remaining calm and vigilant.
The situation remains tense as authorities work to determine the source and intent behind the shelling. Further updates are expected following the scheduled DGMO dialogue on May 12.
