Air raid sirens echoed through the cities of Chandigarh and Patiala on Friday morning as authorities issued emergency advisories in the wake of a foiled missile and drone attack by Pakistan targeting three Indian military bases.
Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav urged residents to stay indoors and avoid open areas such as balconies. “An air warning has been received from the Air Force Station of a possible attack. Sirens are being sounded. All are advised to remain indoors and away from balconies,” the advisory stated.
In Patiala district, similar alerts were issued, with authorities stressing the importance of staying calm and avoiding non-essential travel. All educational institutions in the district have been closed until further notice.“
All residents of District Patiala are requested to remain indoors and stay calm. Please avoid stepping out unless it is absolutely necessary,” read a statement from the Patiala Deputy Commissioner’s office.
Punjab Enforces Emergency Measures
The Punjab government responded to the growing threat with heightened emergency protocols. All educational institutions across the state have been ordered shut for three days, and all police leaves have been cancelled until further notice.
Additionally, district administrations in Tarn Taran and Fazilka have imposed a temporary ban on firecracker use during weddings and public events to prevent panic and confusion.
A control room has been established by the Punjab government to assist residents during this tense period.
In Chandigarh, which serves as the shared capital of Punjab and Haryana, schools will remain closed through Saturday.
Backdrop of Escalation
The alerts come in the aftermath of retaliatory strikes by Indian armed forces targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. These strikes were in response to the April 22 Pahalgam massacre, which claimed numerous lives.
Following India’s counter-operations, Pakistan intensified its cross-border aggression, employing mortars and heavy artillery in multiple sectors across Jammu and Kashmir including Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, Poonch, Mendhar, and Rajouri resulting in the deaths of 16 civilians.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as security forces remain on high alert along the border and in key cities.
