Multiple loud explosions were reported in Jammu on Thursday evening, sparking widespread panic and triggering a complete power blackout across the region. The unsettling developments come just a day after India launched precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir under the recently initiated ‘Operation Sindoor.’
Residents in several areas reported hearing air raid sirens prior to the explosions, followed by complete darkness and flashes of light in the sky. Some eyewitnesses claimed to have seen projectiles and red glows moments before the blasts. The exact cause of the explosions is yet to be officially confirmed.
The sudden chaos sent people scrambling for safety, with shopkeepers hurriedly closing shops and heading home. The blackout and explosions led to growing concerns about a possible retaliatory strike, although no official statement has yet been made by defense authorities.
Former Jammu and Kashmir DGP Shesh Paul Vaid took to X (formerly Twitter) to reassure residents, stating: “Complete blackout in Jammu. Loud explosions bombing, shelling, or missile strikes suspected. Fret not Mata Vaishno Devi is with us, and so are the valiant Indian Armed Forces.”

Social media was flooded with videos and accounts from residents. One user wrote: “Missiles are flying over our houses in Jammu RIGHT NOW. This is not hearsay, I’m witnessing and recording it myself. The threat is real. Civilian lives are at stake.”
Similar sirens have reportedly been heard in other areas of Jammu and Kashmir, including Kupwara, Baramulla, and Akhnoor, increasing apprehension across the region.‘
Operation Sindoor’: India’s Retaliatory Strike
The explosions in Jammu follow India’s decisive military action against nine terror camps located across the Line of Control (LoC) and the international border in Pakistan and PoK. Launched under ‘Operation Sindoor,’ the strikes came two weeks after the brutal massacre of 26 individuals, primarily tourists, in Pahalgam.
According to sources, the operation was carried out with precision, targeting terror camps situated 9 to 100 kilometers inside enemy territory. These camps were selected based on specific intelligence inputs and their known history of orchestrating attacks against India.
The strikes were authorized after Prime Minister Narendra Modi granted the armed forces full operational freedom to respond to the Pahalgam tragedy. The directive emphasized complete autonomy in choosing the “mode, targets, and timing” of the retaliation.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely. Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
