In a powerful display of leadership and operational excellence, Colonel Sophia Qureshi of the Indian Army and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh of the Indian Air Force led the media briefing on ‘Operation Sindoor,’ alongside Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. The press conference followed India’s decisive military strike on Pakistan, carried out in retaliation for the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives.

Who is Colonel Sophia Qureshi?
Colonel Sophia Qureshi, a distinguished officer from the Indian Army’s Corps of Signals, has carved a notable path through her military service. She holds the distinction of being the first woman officer to command an Indian Army contingent in a multinational military exercise, a milestone she achieved in 2016. During this landmark drill, hosted by India and involving 18 nations, Colonel Qureshi stood out as the sole female commander.
Originally from Gujarat, Colonel Qureshi has an academic background in biochemistry and was commissioned as a Lieutenant from the Officers Training Academy, Chennai, in 1999. She hails from a proud military family her grandfather also served in the Indian Army. She is married to an officer in the Mechanised Infantry.

In 2006, Colonel Qureshi served with the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Congo. Speaking about the role of such missions in a 2016 interview, she highlighted their crucial responsibilities, which include monitoring ceasefires and supporting humanitarian efforts in conflict zones to promote stability and peace.
With her extensive experience and trailblazing achievements, Colonel Qureshi continues to be a symbol of strength and service in the Indian Armed Forces.
