In a shocking incident, a 25-year-old woman sustained 60% burn injuries after being attacked with acid by a married man and his accomplices in Mau district on Saturday. The assault, believed to be motivated by jealousy over her upcoming marriage, occurred in the Ghosi Kotwali area.
The victim, who was scheduled to get married on May 27 with the tilak ceremony planned for May 23, was ambushed while returning home from a bank. Two masked men on a motorcycle threw acid on her, severely injuring her face, neck, and shoulder.
She was rushed to a hospital in Azamgarh, where doctors confirmed that she had suffered critical injuries. According to police, in her statement from the hospital, the woman revealed that one of the attackers warned her, saying, “If you don’t become mine, I will not let you become anyone else’s.”
Additional Superintendent of Police Mahesh Singh Atri confirmed the arrest of three individuals in connection with the case: Ram Janam Singh Patel, the main accused; and his associates Manoj Yadav and Surendra Yadav.
Investigations revealed that Patel, who is already married with four children, had been in an alleged relationship with the victim for five years. Upset upon learning about her engagement to another man, Patel allegedly planned and executed the attack with the help of the other two accused.
Police have registered an FIR and recovered the motorcycle used in the crime. All three suspects are now in custody as the investigation continues.
This incident has once again highlighted the growing concern over gender-based violence and the need for stronger preventive measures and swift justice for victims.
