Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif claimed on Monday that India is preparing for a military incursion in response to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which left 26 dead.

Speaking to Reuters, Asif said, “We have reinforced our forces because it is something which is imminent now. In that situation, some strategic decisions have to be taken—and those decisions have been taken.” While he did not provide further specifics, Asif stated that India’s rhetoric has been escalating and Pakistan’s military has briefed its leadership about a possible attack.

The deadly assault in Pahalgam last week sparked outrage across India, with many demanding strict action against Pakistan. Investigators reportedly identified two suspects as Pakistani nationals, an allegation Islamabad strongly denies. Pakistan has instead called for a “neutral and transparent” investigation into the incident.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, addressing cadets at a military academy in Abbottabad, reiterated Islamabad’s willingness to cooperate. “Pakistan is open to participating in any neutral, transparent and credible investigation,” he said. His remarks were criticized by Jammu & Kashmir’s Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

Asif further warned that while Pakistan seeks peace, it remains on high alert. He also emphasized that nuclear weapons would only be used “if there is a direct threat to our existence.”

The situation echoes the heightened tensions of 2019, when Pakistan responded to India’s Balakot airstrikes with what it called a “measured yet resolute” counter-action.
