In the aftermath of a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 28 tourists and left several others injured, the Jammu and Kashmir government has announced financial compensation for the victims and their families.
An ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh will be provided to the next of kin of those who lost their lives, while Rs 2 lakh will be given to individuals with serious injuries and Rs 1 lakh to those with minor wounds.
The attack occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Baisaran, a popular tourist spot near Pahalgam known as ‘mini Switzerland’, where heavily armed terrorists opened fire on a group of civilians, primarily tourists.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Srinagar on Wednesday to meet the grieving families and pay tribute to the victims during a solemn wreath-laying ceremony. Congress MP KC Venugopal and J&K Congress President Tariq Hameed Karra also paid their respects.
The ambush, which took place in the Anantnag district, is considered one of the most serious terror incidents in the Valley since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. Security has been tightened across all major tourist destinations in the region.
Joint forces of the Army and J&K Police continue search and rescue operations, with combing efforts underway to track down those responsible for the attack. An investigation is currently in progress.
