In a significant personal milestone, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former MP Dilip Ghosh is all set to marry party colleague Rinku Majumdar on Friday evening. The private ceremony will be held in New Town, Kolkata, and is expected to be attended by close family members and a few senior BJP leaders.
At 60, Ghosh is stepping into matrimony for the first time, fulfilling a longstanding wish of his mother. “My mother wanted me to get married, so to honour her wish, I am tying the knot. I will continue to be in active politics as I was before. My personal life will have no impact on my political work,” Ghosh stated in an interview with a news channel.
The bride, Rinku Majumdar, is also a familiar face in Bengal BJP circles. She has held several key organizational roles, including in the BJP Mahila Morcha (women’s wing), the OBC front, and the party’s handloom cell. This will be her second marriage. She has a son who works at an IT firm in Salt Lake, Kolkata.
A Bond Forged in Politics and Morning Walks
According to party insiders, the couple’s connection began in 2021, during early morning walks at Eco Park. While both had been active in the party for years, it was only in the lead-up to the 2021 assembly elections that they began to interact more frequently.
Rinku shared her side of the story in a candid interview with News18, saying, “Since 2013, I’ve been associated with the BJP organisationally. When he was an MLA and then an MP, I never spoke to him. At that time, I worked at the block level. We first spoke casually before the 2021 elections at Eco Park. During this Lok Sabha election, we started talking a bit more. Very ordinary interactions, nothing beyond that.”
It was in mid-September last year that Rinku began contemplating marriage and proposed the idea to Ghosh. “My conditions were: the person should be from New Town and must accept my political career. While thinking through all this, he came to mind. He is the most eligible bachelor in my constituency. He’s not like the usual political figures. He’s a very good person—very honest, strong. I really liked these qualities and thought, why not propose to him?” she said.
The proposal, notably, came from the bride’s side. The decision to marry reportedly solidified during an IPL match earlier this month at Eden Gardens, where the two were seen together. Their appearance at the venue had sparked speculation about their relationship in political circles and among the media.
From RSS to BJP Stalwart
Dilip Ghosh, known for his fiery speeches and offbeat remarks, has been a prominent figure in West Bengal politics. A long-time member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), he transitioned to active politics in 2015 when he formally joined the BJP.
He rose quickly through the ranks and served as the West Bengal BJP president, during which he is credited with building the party’s base and positioning it as the principal opposition in the state, overtaking the CPI(M).
Ghosh served as the MLA from Kharagpur and was later elected as a Member of Parliament. Although he did not contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he remains a key strategist and organizational force within the BJP. Party insiders believe he will play a crucial role in shaping the BJP’s campaign for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections.
On Friday morning, state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar and other senior leaders visited Ghosh’s residence in New Town to extend their congratulations and best wishes ahead of the ceremony.
