Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to launch the “NITI NCAER States Economic Forum” portal on Tuesday, April 1, 2025. This new initiative, developed by NITI Aayog in collaboration with the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), is designed to offer easy access to a comprehensive and extensive database containing crucial social, economic, and fiscal information about India’s states. The portal will cover a period of over three decades, with data available up to the financial year 2022-23.

Key Features of the Portal

The portal will be a central repository of data categorized across five key verticals:

1. Demography

2. Economic Structure

3. Fiscal

4. Health

5. Education

These categories will allow users to explore detailed and varied datasets, providing an in-depth understanding of the socio-economic landscape of Indian states. The data will not only span several decades but will also allow for analysis of long-term trends and patterns.

Macro and Fiscal Landscape of Indian States

One of the portal’s highlights is its ability to offer a macroeconomic and fiscal landscape of 28 Indian states. The information will be structured around various indicators related to:

Demography: Data on population, age structure, migration patterns, etc.

Economic Structure: Insights into the economic activities, industries, and sectoral contributions.

Socio-Economic Indicators: Information on poverty rates, income inequality, employment, and living standards.

Fiscal Indicators: Data concerning state finances, including revenue, expenditure, and fiscal health.

These datasets will help users track and analyze the economic and fiscal performance of states, providing valuable insights into how states have evolved over time and how they compare to national trends.

User-Friendly Format and Access

The portal will be structured in a way that makes the data easily accessible and interpretable. Designed with a user-friendly interface, it will ensure that policymakers, researchers, academics, and the general public can access relevant information with ease. The intuitive format will allow users to quickly navigate through various parameters and obtain the data they need for informed decision-making and research.

Facilitating Informed Debates and Policy Formulation

One of the portal’s primary objectives is to provide a platform for informed debates and discussions. By offering detailed and up-to-date data, the portal will empower policymakers, researchers, and others involved in governance, development, and policy design to engage in well-informed conversations and make evidence-based decisions. It will serve as an essential tool for those working in sectors related to social, economic, and fiscal development.

Tracking Progress and Identifying Emerging Patterns

Another significant advantage of the portal is its capability to help users track the progress of different states over time. By leveraging historical data and real-time analytics, users will be able to detect emerging trends, identify challenges, and observe areas of progress. This feature will allow for better forecasting and planning in both state and national policy contexts.

Benchmarking State Data

The portal will also facilitate the benchmarking of state data, enabling users to compare individual states against national averages or other states. This comparison will allow for an assessment of relative performance in areas such as economic growth, fiscal management, education, healthcare, and more. The benchmarking feature will enable states to learn from the experiences of others, promoting a more collaborative and competitive approach to development.

A Central Repository for Development

Ultimately, the “NITI NCAER States Economic Forum” portal is envisioned to act as a one-stop resource for data and insights, promoting evidence-based policymaking at the state and national levels. By offering a rich, structured, and easily navigable repository of social, economic, and fiscal data, it will support the creation of more targeted, efficient, and effective development policies.

With the integration of historical trends and modern data analytics, the portal will not only enhance the understanding of India’s regional disparities but also support the formulation of policies that address specific developmental challenges at the state level.

A New Tool for Empowering Policymakers and Researchers

This portal represents a significant step in improving data accessibility and fostering informed debates on India’s economic and social development. As the country continues to evolve, having access to comprehensive, up-to-date, and easily interpretable data will be vital for making strategic decisions that drive growth and development across states. By launching this platform, NITI Aayog and NCAER aim to empower stakeholders with the data needed to create a more equitable and prosperous future for all regions of India.

Through this portal, the government hopes to provide not just data, but a means of fostering collaboration, innovation, and evidence-based decision-making that will lead to sustainable development across all states.
