In a tragic incident, one person has been confirmed dead and seven others injured after 11 coaches of the Bangalore-Kamakhya AC Superfast Express derailed in Odisha’s Cuttack district. The derailment occurred at around 11:54 AM near Nergundi Station, within the Cuttack-Nergundi Railway Section of the Khurda Road Division under the East Coast Railway zone.
Subash Chandra Ray, the administrative officer at SCB Medical College and Hospital, reported that the body of one passenger had been recovered, and multiple injured passengers were promptly attended to. “Three teams of doctors have been engaged to treat the injured passengers,” Ray confirmed. The identity of the deceased has yet to be revealed.
Authorities swiftly responded to the disaster. NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) teams, along with fire services, were immediately mobilized to the site. A relief train was also dispatched to the scene to assist with the evacuation and provide necessary support. Ashok Kumar Mishra, a senior railway official, assured that efforts were underway to address the situation. “Our resources are on the ground, and we are taking all necessary measures to ensure safety and swift assistance for those affected,” he stated.
The divisional railway manager (DRM) of Khurda Road, along with the general manager of East Coast Railway and other senior officials, have arrived at the site to oversee the response efforts. An accident relief train and medical relief teams have been deployed, while restoration work is set to begin once initial assessments are completed.
Several trains have been diverted due to the derailment, with East Coast Railway (ECoR) officials working on alternate arrangements to help stranded passengers reach their destinations.To aid those affected, the Railways has issued the following helpline numbers for updates and assistance:

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his concern over the incident and confirmed that his office is in close contact with the Odisha government regarding the train accident. “I am aware of the incident involving the 12551 Kamakhya Express in Odisha. @CMOfficeAssam is in touch with the Odisha Government and Railways. We will reach out to every person who is affected,” Sarma wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
