The viral Ghibli trend, inspired by the iconic animation style of Japan’s Studio Ghibli, has taken the internet by storm, and now even Indian politicians are joining the craze. Politicians from various parties have embraced this AI-generated aesthetic, which transforms images into hand-drawn animation resembling the work of legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki.

MyGov, the Government of India’s official Instagram account, has entered the trend by posting 15 AI-generated images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Studio Ghibli style. The caption accompanying the pictures on X (formerly Twitter) reads, “Main character? No. He’s the whole storyline. Swipe through New India in Studio Ghibli strokes.” The images show the Prime Minister in various settings, from holding the Indian flag to meeting former US President Donald Trump, delivering speeches, and even bowing before the Ram Lalla idol in Ayodhya.

In a similar vein, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) shared a Ghibli-styled image of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Parliament. The image was paired with a bold statement: “PoK is ours, and we will take it back.”

Not to be left behind, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor also joined the Ghibli trend, sharing AI-generated artwork of himself on X. “I’ve been assimilated into the Ghibli trend!” Tharoor wrote, adding, “Didn’t even know what Ghibli was till now, but consider me officially Spirited Away by this newfound revelation!”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also embraced the trend, sharing a Ghibli-style photo of himself with Prime Minister Modi. “That’s my Ghibli style entry. Technology just doesn’t stop surprising us pleasantly!” he wrote in his post.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar joined the fun as well, posting a Ghibli-styled photograph of him with his mother. He described the trend as “super cool,” adding, “Aai and Me decided that Ghibli is one trend worth a shot! Have to say, it is super cool!”

What is the Ghibli Trend?

The Ghibli trend is a result of recent updates to OpenAI’s image generator, now available through ChatGPT-4o. This new feature allows users to generate images in the unique hand-drawn animation style associated with Studio Ghibli, a hallmark of Hayao Miyazaki’s work. By entering specific prompts, users can transform their photos into Ghibli-inspired anime images. Free users are allowed to generate up to three images at no cost, making this viral trend accessible to a wide audience.

With politicians now embracing this fun and creative trend, it’s clear that the Ghibli wave is only growing, merging the worlds of art, politics, and AI in a fascinating new way.
