Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced that a delegation of MPs from the state will soon meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address concerns regarding the 2026 delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies. The delegation aims to advocate for the rights of Tamil Nadu, ensuring that the delimitation process is fair and does not disadvantage the state or other affected regions.

The announcement followed the first meeting of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) on March 22, which Stalin chaired. The committee has been actively raising awareness about the potential negative impact of the delimitation on the state’s democratic rights and political representation. CM Stalin emphasized that the issue had gained significant national attention due to Tamil Nadu’s efforts.

During his address, Stalin thanked the principal opposition party, AIADMK, and other parties for participating in the all-party meeting and supporting the JAC’s cause. He also reminded the House of the Tamil Nadu Assembly’s historic unanimous resolution on February 14, which raised concerns about how the 2026 delimitation could affect the state’s political representation.

In addition, an all-party meeting on March 5 led to the adoption of a resolution urging Prime Minister Modi to provide a clear assurance in Parliament that the 1971 Census population would continue to be the basis for delimitation of Lok Sabha seats for the next 30 years, until 2056. The resolution also called for a Constitutional amendment to solidify this position.

The JAC’s first meeting, attended by several Chief Ministers, resulted in the adoption of a resolution requesting an extension of the freeze on parliamentary constituencies based on the 1971 Census population for another 25 years, similar to the freeze applied in 2001. The committee also highlighted that states with reduced population shares due to population control measures should not be penalized in the delimitation process.

The meeting concluded with a decision to submit a formal representation to Prime Minister Modi, urging him to address these issues and ensure a fair delimitation process for the 2026 elections.
