The Bombay High Court has expedited the divorce proceedings of cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and his estranged wife, Dhanashree Verma, waiving the mandatory six-month cooling-off period under the Hindu Marriage Act. The court directed the family court to finalize their divorce petition by Thursday, March 20, due to Chahal’s upcoming IPL 2025 commitments.
A single bench of Justice Madhav Jamdar stated that Chahal would be unavailable after March 21 due to his participation in the IPL, which begins on March 22. Chahal and Verma filed for divorce by mutual consent on February 5, and initially requested the court to waive the cooling-off period, which was later denied by the family court on February 20. The couple then approached the Bombay High Court to challenge the decision.
Justice Jamdar acknowledged Chahal’s IPL schedule and urged the family court to resolve the matter promptly. “As the petitioner No. 1 (Chahal) is a participant in the IPL, the advocate informs that he may not be available post March 21. The family court is hence requested to decide their divorce plea by tomorrow (March 20),” the court said.
Chahal’s IPL 2025 Auction Record
Chahal, who has represented Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Rajasthan Royals in previous seasons, was acquired by Punjab Kings for ₹18 crore in the 2025 IPL auction, setting a new record for the highest price ever paid to a spinner in the tournament’s history.
The leg-spinner, with 205 wickets to his name, is the only player to have taken more than 200 wickets in IPL history. Known for his four variations – leg-spinner, two types of googlies, and a flipper – Chahal emphasizes mental strength and adaptability as key factors in his success.“
I’ve always had this belief, being mentally very strong. When you don’t believe in yourself, how will others do? Whether I am bowling the first over or the 20th, you have to think right…stay in the present,” Chahal stated in an interview with Hindustan Times.
Chahal will make his debut for Punjab Kings in the 2025 season on March 25, when they face Gujarat Titans in their opening match.
