Delhi’s long wait for a new chief minister came to an end today as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) officially announced Rekha Gupta as the leader of the House. Gupta, who is set to lead the national capital, will take the oath of office on February 20 in a grand ceremony at the iconic Ramlila Maidan.
The decision was finalized during a meeting of all newly-elected BJP Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) at the party headquarters in New Delhi on Wednesday evening. The announcement marks the culmination of the BJP’s sweeping victory in the recent Delhi Assembly elections.
Swearing-In Ceremony Details
Rekha Gupta’s oath-taking ceremony, scheduled for Thursday, will be a high-profile event, with the entire cabinet to be sworn in alongside her. The ceremony is set to begin at 11 am, with the oath of office being administered by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena at precisely 12:35 pm.
A massive turnout is expected at Ramlila Maidan, with an estimated 50,000 people in attendance. According to sources close to the matter, around 40 celebrities, along with key political figures, have been invited to the event. High-profile dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and several Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states, are set to attend the ceremony.
A Historic Event
BJP MP Yogender Chandolia, speaking about the event, emphasized the scale of the ceremony. He mentioned that people from all walks of life, including party workers, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), and members from various sections of society, would be present to witness the momentous occasion. The venue was chosen due to its large capacity, as the space at the Raj Niwas would have been insufficient to accommodate such a significant gathering.”
This will be a grand event, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Cabinet ministers attending. The event will last approximately 25-30 minutes,” Chandolia added.
BJP’s Historic Victory in Delhi Elections
The announcement of Rekha Gupta’s appointment comes after the BJP’s historic win in the Delhi Assembly elections held earlier this month. The party clinched a resounding victory by winning 48 out of 70 assembly seats, marking a significant return to power in Delhi after a 27-year gap. This victory ended the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) dominance in the region.
In the February elections, AAP secured 22 seats, while Congress failed to win a single seat in the assembly. With Rekha Gupta set to become the new Chief Minister of Delhi, the BJP is positioning itself to build on its success and further solidify its influence in the capital city. The party’s leaders have expressed confidence in Gupta’s leadership, citing her experience and dedication to public service as key qualities that will help her lead Delhi into a new era.
As the national capital prepares for a grand swearing-in ceremony, all eyes are on the future direction of Delhi’s governance under the BJP-led administration.
