In a warm and significant gesture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, at the Palam Technical Airport in New Delhi on Monday. The two leaders shared an emotional and cordial moment, exchanging a hug as they met, symbolizing the close friendship and mutual respect between the two nations.
A Brotherly Welcome
Prime Minister Modi described the Amir of Qatar as his brother and extended a heartfelt welcome, wishing him a fruitful and productive stay in India. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi shared his excitement, saying, “Went to the airport to welcome my brother, Amir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani. Wishing him a fruitful stay in India and looking forward to our meeting tomorrow.” This gesture highlighted the deep personal bond between the two leaders.

The Amir of Qatar is in India for a two-day state visit, accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes senior ministers, officials, and a prominent business delegation. This visit marks the Amir’s second state visit to India, the first being in March 2015.
Ceremonial Welcome and Key Discussions Ahead
On February 18, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani will be formally welcomed with a ceremonial reception at the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhawan. During his visit, the Amir will engage in important discussions with Indian President Droupadi Murmu, who will also host a banquet in his honor.
The Amir is expected to hold high-level talks with Prime Minister Modi, with discussions focused on various aspects of bilateral relations, including trade, defense, energy, technology, and cultural cooperation. The visit aims to further strengthen the already robust relationship between India and Qatar.
A History of Strong Bilateral Ties
India and Qatar share long-standing historical ties built on mutual respect, trust, and cooperation. Over the years, the relationship between the two nations has evolved into a multifaceted partnership, encompassing trade, investment, energy, and people-to-people connections. The Indian diaspora in Qatar is the largest expatriate community in the country, contributing significantly to the nation’s progress and development.
This visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to the growing bilateral ties. In particular, it underscores the importance of the cooperation between the two countries in sectors like trade, energy, defense, and maritime security.
Trade and Economic Relations
In 2022-23, India-Qatar bilateral trade amounted to USD 18.77 billion. Qatar’s exports to India primarily include Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), chemicals, petrochemicals, plastics, and aluminum articles. India, on the other hand, exports cereals, copper and iron articles, textiles, processed foods, construction materials, chemicals, and precious stones to Qatar.
The trade relations between the two countries have grown significantly in recent years, with both nations benefiting from a mutually advantageous exchange of goods and services. Qatar remains a crucial source of energy for India, particularly in the form of LNG, which is vital for India’s energy security.

Strengthening Defense Cooperation
Defense collaboration forms a critical pillar of India-Qatar ties. India has been offering defense training slots to Qatar in its premier defense institutions. Additionally, India participates regularly in the biennial Doha International Maritime Defense Exhibition and Conference (DIMDEX), which serves as a platform for strengthening maritime security cooperation.
Indian Naval and Coast Guard ships frequently visit Qatar, facilitating enhanced bilateral cooperation in defense and maritime affairs. This growing defense partnership reflects the broader strategic engagement between the two countries, with both nations keen on expanding their cooperation in security and defense matters.
Future Prospects for Bilateral Relations
The visit of the Amir of Qatar is expected to further solidify the already close ties between the two nations. With both countries seeking to build on their strong foundations, there are numerous opportunities for collaboration in various sectors, including infrastructure, education, health, and sustainable development.
The growing defense cooperation, expanding trade relations, and people-to-people interactions continue to underscore the deep and evolving bond between India and Qatar, making the Amir’s visit a significant milestone in the bilateral relationship.
As the Amir embarks on this two-day state visit, both nations look forward to enhancing their ties and exploring new avenues of collaboration to serve their mutual interests and contribute to the regional and global peace and prosperity.
