Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently on an official visit to France, visited the historic city of Marseille, which holds significant importance in India’s quest for independence. While in Marseille, PM Modi paid tribute to one of India’s prominent freedom fighters, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, also known as Veer Savarkar, for his bravery and significant contributions to the country’s struggle against British colonial rule.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi expressed his deep respect for Savarkar and acknowledged the vital role Marseille played in India’s fight for freedom. “Landed in Marseille. In India’s quest for freedom, this city holds special significance. It was here that the great Veer Savarkar attempted a courageous escape,” he wrote.

The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to recognize the courage of the French activists who stood in solidarity with Savarkar during his time in France. He thanked them for their efforts in opposing the British authorities’ demand for Savarkar’s extradition. “I also want to thank the people of Marseille and the French activists of that time who demanded that he not be handed over to British custody. The bravery of Veer Savarkar continues to inspire generations!” PM Modi wrote on social media.

Savarkar’s Courageous Escape

The connection between Marseille and Savarkar dates back to July 8, 1910, when Savarkar, who had been arrested by the British for his involvement in revolutionary activities, was being transported to India aboard the British ship Morea. During the journey, Savarkar managed to escape through a porthole, swimming to the shore of Marseille. However, he was soon captured by the French authorities, who later handed him back to the British. Following this failed escape attempt, Savarkar was sentenced to life imprisonment and sent to the infamous Cellular Jail in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where he endured severe conditions and relentless punishment.

PM Modi’s Visit to Marseille and New Consulate Inauguration

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Marseille also marks the inauguration of the new Indian Consulate General in the city. This event underscores the growing importance of the bilateral relationship between India and France, particularly in the areas of diplomacy, trade, and cultural exchanges. The inauguration ceremony is expected to further strengthen India’s presence in the region and enhance its diplomatic outreach.

In addition to the consulate inauguration, PM Modi will also pay his respects at the Mazargues War Cemetery in Marseille. This site honors the memory of Indian soldiers who fought alongside the French during the World Wars. The visit highlights the shared history between India and France and the sacrifices made by Indian soldiers in global conflicts.

PM Modi’s trip to Marseille is a reminder of the city’s historical connection to India’s fight for freedom, symbolized by the bravery of Veer Savarkar. Through his tribute, Modi not only acknowledged Savarkar’s courage but also honored the French activists who played a crucial role in protecting him from British authorities. This visit is also a significant step in strengthening the ties between India and France, while commemorating the sacrifices of Indian soldiers in the World Wars.

As the Prime Minister continues his visit, the ongoing celebrations of India’s rich historical ties with France are set to further deepen the bond between the two nations.
