A police case has been registered against popular YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia and several others in Assam following a backlash over controversial remarks made during a comedy show. The comments, made on Samay Raina’s YouTube show India’s Got Latent, were deemed vulgar and sexually explicit, sparking widespread condemnation. Allahbadia, along with other prominent figures like Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh, Apoorva Makhija, and Samay Raina, has been accused of promoting obscenity and engaging in inappropriate discussions that crossed societal boundaries.
The case, which is among several complaints filed across the country, was the first to be registered by Assam Police. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to Twitter to announce the move, signaling the state’s stance on such issues. The controversial remarks occurred during Allahbadia’s appearance on India’s Got Latent, a show that has attracted criticism for its often unrestrained humor and remarks.
The Incident That Sparked the Backlash
The controversy began when Ranveer Allahbadia, known for his popular podcast and social media influence, made a deeply inappropriate remark during the show. The comment, aimed at a contestant, involved a crude and graphic question: “Would you rather watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life or join in once and stop it forever?”
The comment was met with immediate outrage from various sections of society, triggering multiple complaints to the police. Allahbadia’s comment was perceived as both vulgar and disrespectful, particularly toward women, drawing significant public criticism.

Legal Action and Complaints
Following the incident, several legal actions were initiated. Prominent advocates Ashish Ray and Pankaj Mishra, who represent victims of such comments, wrote to Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phalsankar and the state women’s commission, urging them to take action. The advocates claimed that Allahbadia’s remarks were disrespectful to women and violated their dignity, thus warranting strict legal consequences.
Additionally, commentator Rahul Easwar filed a formal complaint, requesting the registration of an FIR under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology Act, for the offensive content shared on the show. Nilotpal Mrinal Pandey, a BJP functionary, also lodged a police complaint with Khar Police in Mumbai, demanding legal action against the individuals involved.
Political Figures Speak Out
The controversy has reached the political sphere, with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressing his disapproval of the comments. Fadnavis stated that while everyone is entitled to freedom of speech, this freedom must not infringe upon the rights of others. He further added, “Everyone has limits, and if anyone crosses them, action will be taken.” His statement underscored the growing concern regarding the need for accountability in public spaces, particularly on platforms like YouTube, which have vast reach among audiences.
Allahbadia’s Apology
In response to the growing criticism, Ranveer Allahbadia issued a public apology through a video message shared on X (formerly Twitter). In the video, he acknowledged his mistake and expressed regret for the remarks made during the show. He stated, “I shouldn’t have said what I said on India’s Got Latent. I’m sorry… My comment wasn’t just inappropriate, it wasn’t even funny. Comedy is not my forte, I am just here to say sorry.”

Despite his apology, the damage had already been done, and many remain unconvinced by the apology, calling for stricter action to prevent such comments in the future.
Controversy Surrounding ‘India’s Got Latent’The show India’s Got Latent, a platform for showcasing various talents such as comedy, poetry, singing, dancing, and magic, has previously faced criticism for offensive and inappropriate remarks, particularly about women and differently-abled individuals. The show, which aims to offer a light-hearted atmosphere, has been accused of crossing the line in the name of humor. Critics argue that the boundary between comedy and disrespect has often been blurred, leading to vulgarity disguised as banter.
While the show’s format allows for humor and unscripted moments, the backlash from this particular incident has raised serious questions about the kind of content allowed on public platforms and whether there needs to be more regulation to prevent such offensive remarks.
The ongoing case in Assam is likely to be a turning point in addressing such issues on digital platforms. As the matter gains traction, it may set a precedent for how similar incidents will be dealt with in the future. With mounting public pressure, it remains to be seen whether further legal consequences will follow for those involved in this incident.
The incident has also sparked a larger conversation about the ethics of digital content, with calls for creators to exercise more responsibility in their interactions with the public. As authorities continue to investigate the matter, the focus on ensuring a respectful and responsible use of social media platforms is expected to intensify.
This controversy highlights the ongoing challenges of balancing free speech with respect and decency in the digital age. Whether or not this case results in further legal action, it serves as a stark reminder that creators must be accountable for their words and actions in the public domain.
