The Uttar Pradesh government is on high alert as it prepares for the highly anticipated ‘Amrit Snan’ (formerly known as Shahi Snan) on the occasion of ‘Mauni Amavasya’ this Wednesday, a day expected to attract over 10 crore pilgrims to the Maha Kumbh Mela. The sacred ritual, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, will see devotees from across the globe converge at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj to take part in the grand dip, marking a significant spiritual event in the Hindu calendar.

Over the past 17 days, the Maha Kumbh 2025 has already seen over 15 crore pilgrims visit the area, taking part in earlier bathing rituals. According to state authorities, the ‘Amrit Snan’ on Mauni Amavasya is expected to be one of the biggest days of the event, requiring extraordinary security and logistical measures.

Unprecedented Security Measures in Place

In preparation for the massive influx of devotees, the Uttar Pradesh government has significantly ramped up security, ensuring that every corner of the Mela area is closely monitored. Authorities have deployed thousands of security personnel across the site, with advanced technology enhancing the safety efforts. AI-powered CCTV cameras and drones have been set up to provide real-time surveillance of the sprawling Mela grounds, which cover several hectares of land around the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers.

Additionally, the Mela area has been declared a no-vehicle zone for the duration of the event to ensure smoother movement of the massive crowd. The Prayagraj administration has urged local residents to avoid using cars during the event and opt for two-wheelers, especially when transporting elderly family members. District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Mandar emphasized, “Residents are requested to use two-wheelers or walk to facilitate the movement of pilgrims from across the globe.”

Staggering Numbers Expected for Amrit Snan

The Amrit Snan on Mauni Amavasya is considered the most auspicious day for a holy dip, with millions of devotees expected to flock to the Sangam. On Makar Sankranti (January 14), 3.5 crore devotees participated in the holy dip, while over 45 lakh pilgrims had already bathed by 8 AM on Tuesday. The authorities anticipate even higher numbers for Mauni Amavasya, which is expected to witness the peak of the Kumbh Mela’s participation.

Special Observances and Rituals

In a unique gesture, the Uttar Pradesh government has planned a flower petal shower from helicopters at 6:45 AM on Wednesday to mark the auspicious occasion. This will add to the spiritual grandeur of the Amrit Snan, where a procession of saints and ascetics from various akharas will make their way to the Sangam, as they have done for centuries.

The date for the Amrit Snan is determined by an astrological alignment of the Sun, Moon, and Jupiter, which are believed to increase the spiritual power of the rivers, making the ritual even more significant. Mauni Amavasya, the Magh Krishna Amavasya according to the Hindu calendar, is regarded as the most important bathing date during the Maha Kumbh Mela.

Ensuring Smooth Operations at Kumbh Grounds

The Prayagraj administration has intensified its efforts to ensure the smooth operation of the Mela, with police officers stationed at strategic points to maintain order. Authorities are also working on crowd management to avoid any mishaps, with multiple entry and exit points designed to streamline the flow of devotees.

The Amrit Snan is the most sacred and awaited ritual of the Kumbh Mela, which draws millions of people to the banks of the Triveni Sangam. Pilgrims believe that taking a dip in the holy waters during this event will wash away their sins and lead them to salvation.

With a combination of enhanced security, religious observances, and logistical coordination, the Uttar Pradesh government aims to ensure that the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 remains a smooth, spiritual, and safe experience for the millions of pilgrims who come to witness this historic event.
