Actor Mamta Kulkarni, who has enthralled audiences in various roles in Bollywood, embarked on a transformative spiritual journey on January 24, 2025, marking a significant shift from her glamorous film career to a life of renunciation. The 52-year-old actress, now adopting the spiritual name ‘Mai Mamta Nand Giri,’ renounced her worldly life during the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela, a sacred gathering in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
In a statement issued by the Uttar Pradesh government, it was confirmed that Kulkarni took her ‘sanyas’ (spiritual renunciation) at the Kinnar Akhara, one of the prominent akharas at the Kumbh. There, she underwent a consecration ceremony and was bestowed with the new identity of ‘Mai Mamta Nand Giri.’ Following the spiritual rites, she performed the sacred ‘Pind Daan’ ritual at the Sangam, the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers, as part of her spiritual initiation.
The Spiritual Journey Begins: Meeting Key Figures and Receiving Blessings
Mamta Kulkarni’s journey to the Kinnar Akhara on January 24, 2025, marked a new chapter in her life. She was welcomed by Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Laxmi Narayan Tripathi of the Kinnar Akhara, who offered her blessings. Kulkarni also met Mahant Ravindra Puri, president of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad (ABAP). Dressed in the attire of a ‘sadhvi’ (female ascetic), Mamta Kulkarni took a dip in the holy waters of the Sangam before proceeding with her renunciation.

Following her initiation, Kulkarni expressed her deep gratitude, calling it a moment of great fortune. “I am blessed to witness this holy moment at the Maha Kumbh,” she said. Reflecting on her spiritual path, she shared that she had received initiation (‘deeksha’) from Guru Shri Chaitanya Gagan Giri in Kupoli Ashram 23 years ago, which had paved the way for her entry into this new phase of life.
The Road to Sanyas and Her Spiritual Connection
Kulkarni revealed that she began her spiritual penance (‘tapasya’) in 2000, gradually developing a connection with the spiritual leaders and akharas of the Kumbh. She explained that she chose Laxmi Narayan Tripathi as her ‘pattaguru’ (spiritual mentor) after being guided by Maa Shakti. “Today is Friday, the day dedicated to Maha Kaali. It was Maa Shakti who instructed me to choose Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, as he is the ‘saakshaat’ (direct) form of Ardhnaareshwar,” she explained.
Kulkarni shared that she had undergone an extensive examination to attain the title of ‘mahamandaleshwar’ (a title for esteemed spiritual leaders), and after passing all the rigorous spiritual tests, she was honored with this esteemed position. Despite some concerns among her fans and followers who believed she might return to Bollywood, Kulkarni assured them that her decision was guided by divine will. “No one can override the will of Mahakaal and Mahakaali,” she affirmed.
Kulkarni’s Spiritual Transformation at the Maha Kumbh
The Maha Kumbh Mela, considered the most sacred of all religious gatherings, is witnessing planetary alignments that occur once every 144 years. Kulkarni, recognizing the auspiciousness of this particular Kumbh, expressed her deep sense of fulfillment in being a part of this momentous event. She also acknowledged the significance of the spiritual title she had earned, which aligns her with other revered mahamandaleshwars, those who hold considerable influence in religious discourse and social welfare.
In her conversation with reporters, Kulkarni emphasized that her spiritual practices over the past two decades had shaped her into the person she is today. “I started my penance in 2000. I had to face many examinations to attain the title of mahamandaleshwar. But now, I have completed the rituals and I am ready to dedicate my life to the service of Sanatan Dharma,” she stated.

The Kinnar Akhara’s Blessings and Kulkarni’s Future Path
Kinnar Akhara’s Mahamandaleshwar, Kaushalya Nand Giri (alias Tina Maa), confirmed that Kulkarni had been associated with their akhara for the past few months and had previously been connected with Juna Akhara for two years. She expressed support for Kulkarni’s decision to serve Sanatan Dharma, noting that the seers of the akhara respected her wish to join the spiritual community.”
Mamta Kulkarni has been in touch with us for the past one to two years. She had been associated with Juna Akhara, but when she expressed her desire to serve Sanatan Dharma, we welcomed her,” said Laxmi Narayan Tripathi. Kulkarni’s entry into the Kinnar Akhara will soon be formalized with a grand consecration ceremony, where saints and devotees will witness her official initiation into the ascetic order.
Becoming a Mahamandaleshwar: A Sacred and Rigorous Journey
The title of mahamandaleshwar is reserved for those who have dedicated years of spiritual practice and service. The process of attaining this title typically spans 12 years, involving strict penance, daily chanting of sacred mantras like Ram Japa 125,000 times, and living a disciplined life of minimal sleep. According to Mahant Balak Das of Patalpuri Math, the key to becoming a mahamandaleshwar is a genuine desire to serve and a life committed to spiritual practice.
Mamta Kulkarni’s transition from a successful actress to a spiritual leader is a profound example of personal transformation, reflecting her dedication to her spiritual calling and commitment to a life of service. The process of becoming a mahamandaleshwar is an arduous one, but Kulkarni’s journey showcases the powerful intersection of devotion, discipline, and divine guidance that is central to the ascetic path.
As Mamta Kulkarni now steps into this new phase of life, her journey is sure to inspire many to reflect on the spiritual possibilities that lie beyond the material world.
