AAP Accuses BJP of ‘Politicizing’ School Bomb Threats, Calls Them ‘Fabricated Stories’

Date:

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh on Tuesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of politicizing the bomb threats received by Delhi schools. Singh’s comments came after Delhi Police claimed that a student arrested in connection with the threats had links to an NGO supporting a political party.

Singh criticized the BJP for using the issue to further their political agenda. “You (BJP) are politicizing the issue of school children getting bomb threats. The first threat was made in May 2024, and after nearly nine months, the Delhi Police has made no statement. But now, with the elections just around the corner, BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi holds a press conference, fabricating stories about different NGOs,” Singh said. He further accused the BJP of not conducting a proper investigation for months, only to come up with claims in the weeks leading up to the elections.

BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi addressed a press conference where he alleged that the bomb threats, which had created panic among Delhi’s parents and citizens, were traced to a juvenile. He claimed the investigation revealed that the juvenile’s family had ties to NGOs that had protested against Afzal Guru’s hanging in the past. Trivedi raised questions about the alleged link between these NGOs and the AAP, pointing out that Delhi Chief Minister Atishi’s parents had supported a clemency petition for Guru, further suggesting potential ties between AAP and these groups. He called on AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal to clarify the party’s involvement, stating that if NGOs were influencing children, it raised serious concerns.

The Delhi Police investigation traced the threats to a 12th-grade student who allegedly sent bomb threat emails to over 400 schools across Delhi. Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Madhup Tewari stated that the police had faced difficulties in tracking the origins of the emails due to the use of a virtual private network (VPN). However, after a forensic examination of the student’s laptop and mobile phone, the police were able to track the threats and examine the background of the student’s father. They discovered that the father had worked with an NGO that had ties to a civil society group involved in protesting Afzal Guru’s execution and supporting a political party.

The police investigation is ongoing, and questions surrounding the student’s family’s affiliations with NGOs continue to raise political debates in the run-up to the Delhi elections.
