Navy Day 2024: Navy’s commitment ensures nation’s safety, prosperity says PM Modi

Date:

On December 4, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Indian Navy for its unwavering dedication in ensuring the nation’s safety, security, and prosperity, while marking Navy Day. This day is a significant occasion to honor the Indian Navy’s critical role in the country’s defense. December 4 was specifically chosen to commemorate the Navy’s valor during the 1971 India-Pakistan war when it inflicted heavy losses on Pakistan, particularly during Operation Trident.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister expressed, “On Navy Day, we salute the valiant personnel of the Indian Navy who protect our seas with unmatched courage and dedication. Their commitment ensures the safety, security and prosperity of our nation. We also take great pride in India’s rich maritime history.”

Indian Navy Day is observed annually to recognize the Navy’s efforts in safeguarding the country’s coastal defense and highlighting the bravery of its personnel who face numerous challenges while ensuring maritime security. The day commemorates the success of Operation Trident, when the Indian Navy attacked Pakistan’s port city of Karachi during the 1971 India-Pakistan war, demonstrating India’s growing naval strength and securing a significant military victory.

The Indian Navy’s role extends beyond national defense, as it ensures the free passage of global trade through the seas and promotes international maritime cooperation. This is vital in maintaining peace along the Indian Ocean region.

Major Naval Upgrades in the Pipeline

As part of strengthening its naval capabilities, the Indian Navy is working on a substantial upgrade. Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi announced that the Navy is in advanced negotiations to finalize deals for 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets worth ₹90,000 crore. Additionally, discussions are underway to acquire three more Scorpene-class submarines, with the deals expected to be concluded by next month.

The acquisition of the Rafale Marine aircraft and additional Scorpene submarines is a significant step in enhancing the Navy’s operational readiness. The three new submarines will join the existing fleet of six Scorpene-class submarines, which have already been constructed at Mazagon Dockyards Limited.

These efforts reflect the Navy’s commitment to safeguarding India’s maritime interests and enhancing its defense capabilities in the region.
