Hyderabad: A 29-year-old woman constable was allegedly murdered by her brother in Ibrahimpatnam, Hyderabad, on Monday in what police suspect to be an honour killing. The woman’s husband has accused the brother of the crime, stating that he opposed their inter-caste marriage.
According to the police, the accused had been planning the murder for a week, motivated by his disapproval of the couple’s inter-caste marriage. As part of the plan, the brother reportedly assigned someone to track his sister’s movements. On the day of the incident, he followed her in a car, rammed her two-wheeler, and stabbed her in the neck before fleeing. The accused has since been apprehended by the police, who have registered a murder case.
The incident occurred when the woman, who worked at the Hayathnagar police station, was en route to duty. The woman’s husband said he spoke to his wife earlier that morning, and during their call, she informed him, “My brother has come to kill me.” The call was abruptly disconnected shortly after.
The victim, who had no parents, had visited her mother-in-law’s home the previous day. Her husband explained that both his wife’s brother and other family members had been opposed to their marriage, citing the difference in their castes. He added that they had been threatened by her brother, who was furious over their marriage, which they had gone ahead with against the family’s wishes.
The husband further clarified that the murder was not related to any land dispute. “It was a planned attack. She was killed because of our inter-caste marriage,” he said, dismissing claims that land issues were involved.
Earlier, the police had conducted counselling for the families involved, in an attempt to address tensions arising from the inter-caste marriage. Investigations are ongoing, with authorities focusing on the honour killing motive.
