Indian Astronauts Successfully Complete Initial Training for ISRO-NASA ISS Mission

Published:

Two Indian astronauts selected for the Axiom-4 mission to the International Space Station (ISS) have successfully completed the initial phase of their training, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced.

Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla (Prime) and Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair (Backup), collectively referred to as the “Gaganyatris,” began their rigorous training program in the United States in August 2024. This is part of a groundbreaking collaboration between ISRO and NASA.

During the first phase of training, the astronauts participated in a variety of activities, including mission orientations, ground facility tours, and SpaceX suit fittings. They were also introduced to space food options, the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, and key systems aboard the ISS. Emergency preparedness was a significant focus, with training in medical emergency procedures, space photography, and communication protocols.

Looking ahead, the Gaganyatris will continue their training with an emphasis on the US Orbital Segment of the ISS and conducting scientific research in microgravity. They will also undergo simulations aboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft to prepare for various mission scenarios.

Earlier this year, in August, Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh highlighted that an Indian astronaut could be aboard the ISS by April 2025, marking a significant milestone in the growing ISRO-NASA partnership.

This training milestone paves the way for India’s deeper involvement in international space exploration and strengthens the collaboration between ISRO and NASA.
