Ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections in February 2025, Congress’ Delhi unit chief, Devender Yadav, confirmed on Friday that the party will contest all 70 seats independently, with no alliance in place. Speaking to the media after attending the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in the national capital, Yadav reiterated that Congress does not announce its chief ministerial candidate in advance. “We will contest all 70 seats. Our leader is elected after we win. This will be the same procedure in Delhi. There is no alliance,” he said.
Yadav, who also led the fourth phase of the party’s Delhi Nyay Yatra, expressed strong criticism of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for what he described as “misgovernance.” He pointed out several issues affecting Delhi residents, including the denial of old age pensions, lack of ration cards for the poor, deteriorating roads, rising pollution levels, unemployment, and rising inflation. He also accused the AAP of launching Mohalla Clinics merely for show, labeling it the “Kejriwal model.”
Meanwhile, Congress leader Priyavrat Singh has been appointed as the chairman of the party’s “war room” for the Delhi assembly polls, as the party gears up for a major push in the upcoming elections.
Congress, which ruled Delhi for three consecutive terms before facing poor performances in the last two elections, is seeking a strong comeback. In the past two elections, the party failed to secure any seats in the Delhi Assembly.
As Congress prepares for the polls, both the BJP and AAP have also started their election preparations. The Delhi BJP Manifesto Committee, chaired by party leader Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, met last week to strategize for the upcoming polls. Delhi BJP president Virendraa Sachdeva expressed confidence that the party would replicate its success in Maharashtra and Haryana. He stated, “PM Modi’s address has filled BJP workers in Delhi with enthusiasm. The time has come for the people of Delhi to give a befitting reply to those ruining the city. The people want a clean, corruption-free Delhi, and after Maharashtra and Haryana, they will elect a BJP government in Delhi too.”
The 70-member Delhi Assembly is set for elections in February 2025, where the battle is expected to be a direct contest between AAP, BJP, and Congress.
