Clashes Erupt Between Udaipur Royal Family Groups, Stones Thrown Outside City Palace, 3 injured

Date:

A clash broke out in Udaipur on Monday, leaving at least three people injured, after BJP MLA Vishvaraj Singh and his supporters were denied entry into the City Palace. The incident followed Vishvaraj’s coronation as the head of the erstwhile royal family of Chittorgarh earlier that day, after the death of his father, Mahendra Singh Mewar, earlier this month.

The tension stems from an ongoing family feud. Vishvaraj’s coronation ceremony was marred by a legal dispute between his late father and his estranged brother, Arvind Singh Mewar. Arvind Singh, who manages the City Palace and the Eklingnath temple, had issued a legal notice against Vishvaraj’s planned visit to both locations as part of royal rituals.

The conflict escalated when Vishvaraj, after his coronation, proceeded to the temple and City Palace, only to be stopped by his cousin and uncle, Arvind Singh. His supporters, angered by the denial, attempted to storm the palace gates, leading to a violent clash with stone pelting.

Visuals from the scene showed Vishvaraj’s supporters chanting slogans outside the palace, while heavy police presence had been set up earlier in anticipation of potential unrest. The police had also set up barricades, following public notices issued by the Shree Eklingji Trust, which manages the palace, stating that Vishvaraj was not a member of the trust and was not allowed entry.

Despite efforts by Udaipur’s District Magistrate, Arvind Poswal, and SP Yogesh Goyal to mediate the situation, talks between both parties remained unresolved. Vishvaraj condemned the actions, calling the denial of entry an unfair obstruction to royal rituals.

The Udaipur Police confirmed that the situation was under control, with officers deployed to ensure law and order.
