Over 37 killed in Sectarian Clashes in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa; Govt Holds Talks with Rival Groups

Published:

At least 37 people have been killed and more than two dozen others injured in violent sectarian clashes between rival tribes in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province over the past 24 hours. The clashes, which erupted in Kurram district near the Afghanistan border, were sparked by a deadly attack on a passenger van convoy on Thursday, which left 47 dead.

The conflict between the Alizai and Bagan tribes has escalated rapidly, with both sides using heavy weapons. Police reports indicate that more than 30 individuals have been injured in the violence, which has also led to extensive property damage, including homes and shops. Thousands of residents have been forced to flee to safer areas.

Authorities have dispatched senior officials, including the provincial law minister, chief secretary, and police inspector general, to the region in an effort to contain the unrest. Despite their efforts, tribal elders have warned of further escalation in the conflict. Helicopter missions are underway to deliver aid and provide assistance to the security forces stationed in the area.

Kurram district, a historically volatile region, has witnessed significant violence in recent months. In September, sectarian clashes between Shia and Sunni tribes over a land dispute led to more than 50 deaths and 120 injuries. The violence also resulted in the closure of key roads, including the Parachinar-Peshawar highway, which has disrupted essential supplies to the region, worsening the crisis.

Local leaders have expressed concern over the ongoing insecurity, with some accusing the government of failing to address the growing threats to civilians traveling in the area. The situation has intensified tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, an area already plagued by militancy from groups like ISIS and the Pakistan Taliban.

As gunfire continues to erupt in several towns, authorities remain on high alert, with efforts to restore order ongoing in the region.
