China Deploys Private Security Firms to Protect Citizens in Pakistan Amid Rising Attacks

Published:

In response to a growing wave of terrorist attacks targeting Chinese nationals in Pakistan, China has moved to enhance the security of its citizens, particularly those involved in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects. To address the rising threats posed by militant groups, China has signed agreements with three private security firms to provide additional protection to its workers in Pakistan.

This decision follows a series of deadly attacks on Chinese citizens, including the tragic suicide bombing on October 6, which killed two Chinese nationals in Balochistan, claimed by the Baloch Liberation Army. With security concerns escalating, China has opted to deploy its own security personnel in Pakistan, supplementing the efforts of Pakistani authorities.

In addition to private security firms, China is pushing for enhanced protection measures through a proposed joint security initiative with Pakistan, aimed at securing Chinese nationals working on CPEC. Furthermore, both nations are conducting a joint anti-terrorism exercise, Warrior-VIII, which will run until December 11, strengthening their collaborative efforts to combat terrorist threats.

Currently, around 30,000 Chinese workers are engaged in various CPEC projects across Pakistan, many of which are in high-risk areas such as Balochistan, where separatist militants have frequently targeted Chinese interests.

As security concerns deepen, China is urging Pakistan to sign an anti-terrorism cooperation agreement, prompting discussions about the potential deployment of Chinese troops to safeguard both personnel and investments. Beijing has also proposed including advanced security technology in CPEC phase two, such as mobile security units and armored vehicles, to ensure the safety of its citizens.

The rising attacks and the significant presence of Chinese nationals in volatile regions like Balochistan and Gwadar have made their protection a priority for both China and Pakistan. As tensions mount, the possibility of an official Chinese military presence in Pakistan to secure its economic and human assets is increasingly likely.
