PM Modi Highlights India’s Commitment to Sustainable Development at G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday, where he reaffirmed India’s unwavering commitment to sustainable development and its strong adherence to the principles of the Paris Agreement. In his speech, PM Modi highlighted the initiatives India has undertaken in key sectors such as housing, water resources, energy, and sanitation, which have played a vital role in advancing a sustainable future.

The Prime Minister, who is currently in Brazil, delivered his remarks during the session on “Sustainable Development and Energy Transition.” He took the opportunity to emphasize that India has not only met but exceeded its climate targets under the Paris Agreement, achieving its goals ahead of schedule.

The Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015 by 196 countries at the COP21 conference in Paris, is a legally binding international treaty aimed at combating climate change. Its primary objective is to limit the global temperature rise to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, with an aspirational target of 1.5°C.”

Guided by our cultural values, India has been a frontrunner in fulfilling its Paris Agreement commitments ahead of time,” PM Modi stated. “Building on this progress, we are now setting even more ambitious targets, particularly in renewable energy. Our world’s largest solar rooftop program stands as a testament to our commitment.”

The Prime Minister also underscored India’s role in supporting the Global South by facilitating access to affordable climate finance and technology. He highlighted initiatives such as the launch of the Global Biofuels Alliance and the promotion of the “One Sun One World One Grid” vision, along with India’s efforts to plant a billion trees under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign.”

Through these efforts, we are not only addressing our own sustainability goals but also contributing to the global fight against climate change,” PM Modi added.

The Prime Minister’s remarks underscored India’s leadership in the global movement for sustainable progress, stressing the importance of international collaboration in the face of climate challenges.

This is a developing story. More details will be updated as they become available.
