Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit, marking the second stop of his three-country tour. Upon his arrival, the Indian diaspora in the city greeted him with Sanskrit chants and cultural performances, showcasing their vibrant traditions and warmth.
Expressing his appreciation for the heartfelt welcome, PM Modi shared his gratitude on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), describing the reception as “memorable.” He also wrote, “A celebration of Indian culture in Brazil! Gratitude for a memorable welcome to Rio de Janeiro…” The Prime Minister went on to say, “Deeply touched by the warm and lively welcome from the Indian community. Their energy reflects the affection that binds us across continents.”
The G20 Leaders’ Summit is taking place over two days, Monday and Tuesday (local time). As the previous host, India is part of the G20 “troika” alongside Brazil, the current host, and South Africa, which will host next year’s summit.
Before arriving in Brazil, Prime Minister Modi visited Nigeria, where he became the first Indian Prime Minister in 17 years to travel to the African nation. In Nigeria, he held “productive” bilateral talks with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and engaged with the large Indian community there. He was also awarded Nigeria’s second-highest honor, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), becoming only the second foreign dignitary to receive the prestigious accolade.
PM Modi’s tour will conclude with a visit to Guyana, marking the third and final leg of his South American trip.
