Campaigning for the Maharashtra and final phase of Jharkhand assembly polls 2024 ends, voting on Nov 20

Date:

The campaigning for the upcoming assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand concluded on Monday, with political parties intensifying their efforts ahead of the crucial votes. Additionally, bypolls in nine Uttar Pradesh assembly constituencies are set to take place, marking a significant electoral event in the region.

Maharashtra: A High-Stakes Contest Amidst Political Fractures

In Maharashtra, the battle for the assembly is heating up between the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance and the ruling Mahayuti coalition. With issues like the redevelopment of Dharavi slums and the caste census taking center stage, the election promises to be a fierce contest. The state will see over 9.7 crore eligible voters casting their votes across 1,00,186 polling stations, with 4,136 candidates representing 158 parties vying for a spot in the assembly.

The election comes against the backdrop of a fragmented political landscape, where Shiv Sena and NCP factions led by Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar, respectively, will face off against the BJP and Congress, who are also attempting to make their mark in the state’s complex political arena.

Jharkhand: JMM-Congress Alliance Faces Tough Challenge

In Jharkhand, where the first phase of voting has already taken place, the ruling JMM-Congress alliance is working hard to retain power. The opposition BJP has sought to challenge the alliance on contentious issues like Rohingya infiltration, adding fuel to an already charged political atmosphere.

The second and final phase of voting will cover 38 constituencies, including eight reserved for Scheduled Tribes and three for Scheduled Castes. A total of 528 candidates are in the fray, and more than 1.23 crore registered voters will cast their votes at 14,218 polling stations.

Uttar Pradesh Bypolls: A Test Ahead of 2027 Elections

In Uttar Pradesh, bypolls will be held for nine assembly seats, with eight of these elections necessitated by the election of incumbent MLAs to the Lok Sabha. The bypolls are being closely watched as a bellwether for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. Polling will take place on November 20, with results set to be declared on November 23.

Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Beyond: A Pivotal Moment for Indian Politics

The upcoming elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, along with the bypolls in Uttar Pradesh, are poised to shape the political landscape in the run-up to the 2024 general elections. In Maharashtra, the BJP’s ambitions will be tested against the strongholds of the Shiv Sena and NCP, while Jharkhand’s political dynamics are under close scrutiny following the arrest of Chief Minister Hemant Soren and the defection of a senior party leader to the BJP.

Meanwhile, the results in Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir earlier this year have further complicated the picture, with Congress facing setbacks and regional players like the JKNC gaining ground. As political alliances continue to shift, the upcoming polls will be crucial in determining whether the BJP consolidates its position or if the opposition bloc, I.N.D.I.A., can make significant gains ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Voters across these states are gearing up for what promises to be a highly contested electoral season, with the fate of these elections hanging in the balance.
