A devastating fire broke out in the children’s ward of Jhansi Medical College in Uttar Pradesh on Friday night, tragically claiming the lives of 10 children. The fire, which occurred in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), also left 32 others rescued from the blaze.
According to police officials, the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit. The children who died were reportedly in incubators at the time of the incident.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, offering condolences to the grieving families. He assured the public that immediate relief efforts were underway. “The death of children in an accident in the NICU of Jhansi Medical College is extremely sad and heartbreaking,” CM Yogi said on X (formerly Twitter). “I have directed the district administration and relevant authorities to expedite relief and rescue operations. My prayers are with the departed souls and I wish for a speedy recovery for the injured.”
In response to the tragedy, CM Yogi dispatched Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak and the state’s Principal Secretary for Health to Jhansi to oversee emergency operations. The Chief Minister also ordered the Commissioner and the DIG to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and submit a detailed report within 12 hours.
The fire has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting swift action from the state government to manage the aftermath and provide assistance to the affected families.
