Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a crucial three-nation tour from November 16 to November 21. The visit aims to strengthen bilateral ties with Nigeria and Guyana while also participating in the G20 Summit in Brazil.
Visit to Nigeria (November 16-17)
PM Modi will begin his tour with a visit to Nigeria at the invitation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Nigeria in 17 years. During his stay, Modi will engage in discussions with Nigerian leadership to review and further enhance the strategic partnership between India and Nigeria, focusing on areas such as economic collaboration, energy, and defense. India and Nigeria have been strategic partners since 2007, with over 200 Indian companies investing more than $27 billion in Nigeria. Modi will also address the Indian community in Nigeria, underscoring the strong people-to-people ties between the two nations.
G20 Summit in Brazil (November 18-19)
The central engagement of Modi’s tour will be his participation in the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from November 18-19. As part of the G20 troika, along with Brazil (the current chair) and South Africa (which will host next year’s summit), India has been actively contributing to key discussions ahead of the event. Modi is expected to present India’s position on global issues, building on the outcomes from the G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration and the Voice of the Global South Summits hosted by India in recent years. On the sidelines of the summit, the Prime Minister is also likely to hold bilateral meetings with other world leaders, although specific details have yet to be confirmed.
Visit to Guyana (November 19-21)
PM Modi’s final stop will be Guyana, where he will visit from November 19-21 at the invitation of President Mohamed Irfaan Ali. This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Guyana since 1968. During his visit, Modi will hold talks with President Ali, meet senior leaders of Guyana, and address both the Guyanese Parliament and a gathering of the Indian diaspora. A key highlight of the visit will be Modi’s participation in the second CARICOM-India Summit in Georgetown, where he will engage with leaders from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to strengthen India’s ties with the region.
In 2023, President Ali visited India as the chief guest at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Madhya Pradesh, where he was awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman, further cementing the growing relationship between the two countries.
This high-profile tour underscores India’s commitment to enhancing diplomatic and economic relations with these important nations and reinforcing its role on the global stage.
