On the day of Diwali, a devastating explosion involving homemade firecrackers occurred in Eluru district, Andhra Pradesh, resulting in the death of a scooter rider and injuries to five others. The incident happened when a sack of ‘onion bombs’—a type of firecracker resembling an onion—detonated after the rider’s Honda Activa scooter hit a pothole.
The rider, identified as Sudhakar, suffered fatal injuries, including severe burns, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The explosion also injured the pillion rider and two pedestrians nearby. The injured individuals have been identified as Tabelu Sai, Suvara Shashi, K Srinivasa Rao, SK Khadar, Suresh, and Satish. They were promptly taken to Eluru Government Hospital for treatment.
Witnesses described the explosion as violent, An ‘onion bomb’ is a firecracker shaped in round or bulbous form resembling an onion. When ignited, it produces a powerful bang, emitting a sudden flash and sometimes smoke, much like a small dynamite blast.
While the rider died on the sport, the pillion rider and two other person standing on the road were injured. They have been taken to a hospital for treatment.According to police, the impact of the blast was so severe that the legs and other body parts of the two-wheeler rider got dismembered.
CCTV footage of the incident aired by local television channels showed an explosion and some persons running away with dust engulfing the area.
